What is Mindfulness Meditation And How Do You Practice It?

In the last post, we talked about some of the many benefits of meditation. In this article, we will talk about a popular type of meditation called mindfulness meditation. What is it and how do you go about practising it.

Mindfulness meditation – as opposed to concentrative meditation where you focus your mind on a single thing – involves focusing your mind on the present moment. To elaborate further, it means being fully aware of your thoughts, your actions and everything around you at present, without judging anything.

Mindfulness meditation is very effective in helping those to forget their painful or unhappy past. It encourages you to live and focus on the present moment, without judging or punishing yourself from the past mistakes or expecting anything from the future.

How do you practice mindfulness meditation?

1. Find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably.

2. Place a meditation cushion or pillow on the floor sit on it.

3. Sit with your head, neck and back straight. Relax all the muscles.

4. Close your eyes.

5. Try not to think about the past or future. Stay in the present by becoming aware of your breathing. Feel the air as it’s moving in and out of your body. Feel your belly rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale. Just focus your attention on each breath you take.

6. When a thought comes up, don’t try to ignore or suppress it. Simply note it and stay calm by focusing on your breath. The idea here is to become an observer of your mind. Just watch every thought as it comes and goes, whether it’s a sad or happy thought. Just observe, do not try to interpret or judge it.

Practice mindfullness meditation daily for 20 minutes and you will find yourself become more forgiving, calm, less stressful and more happy. You will start to direct your energy and focus on the present instead of wasting it on thinking about the past or worrying about the future. That’s the benefits you will get from practicing meditation. Believe me, it works!

Easy Meditation Techniques That Will Help You Reach A Meditative State

Meditation – once considered as something that was mysterious – is now taking a center stage in our lives. The reason why it has become so prevalent is because it gives positive effects to both our mind and body. Meditation, if practiced on a regular basis, can give you peace of mind and healthy body.

Meditation is not rocket science, in fact it’s something quite easy to do; with some practices, everyone can do it and enjoy its greatness. There are many meditation techniques exist but the ultimate purpose of meditation is to ‘quiet the mind’.

What do I mean by ‘quiet the mind’? Well, it simply means empty your mind; give your mind a break or make your mind free from any thought pattern. In other words, you are trying to stay in the present moment rather than thinking about the past or the future.

This leads to the next question… How do you do that?

Here are some easy meditation techniques you can follow and apply…

First, you need to find a place where you can sit comfortably without being disturbed by others. Close your eyes. Now, focus or give full attention to YOURSELF. Then, try to quiet your mind. At first, you’ll find it’s a bit difficult to quiet your mind as thoughts will soon creep in.

One technique you need to learn is make yourself become an observer of your thoughts, just listen to what the narrative voice in your head says without engage it. And then calmly remind yourself to focus on the present moment and try to quiet your mind again. With some practice, you’ll soon find it easy to make your mind still, stopping it to drift into the next thought.

If you find the above meditation technique (quiet or empty the mind) difficult, you can practice another technique called ‘Focused Meditation’. With this technique, you’re actually focusing intently on something… a music (sound of ocean waves), your own breathing, a liberty statue or a metronome. The idea is to focus on something that is repetitive and monotone.

Some people find this technique easier than focusing on nothing or trying to empty the mind. But, the basic idea is the same… trying to stay in the present moment and prevent the mind to slip into a normal thought pattern.

If you practice meditation using the above techniques on a regular basis, you will find your concentration improved
substantially. You’ll have a sharper mind and be able to focus on your daily activities better.

Give it a try! It’s good for your mind & body.

How To Practice Basic Meditation for Stress Management

In today’s hustle and bustle world, many of us often feel stressed out. Well, who doesn’t? We rarely give ourselves the time to relax and recharge. Our minds and emotions are always running in high gear, there is no time for us to give ‘inner-peace’ to our mind and body.

It doesn’t have to be like that. In this article, I will share with you some simple tips to practice basic meditation. There are many ways to meditate, but at moment I don’t yet have the time to explore and practice them. However, I do manage to give myself time to practice the most basic of meditation. It’s easy to do and doesn’t take much time.

Meditation can give you many health benefits. It’s a great way to empty and organize your clustered mind, not to mention it helps to relieve stress as well.

Here are the steps to practice basic meditation…

1. Find a quiet place where you can sit still for at least 20 minutes without being disturbed.

2. Find a place where you can sit comfortably. For example, you can sit on a meditation cushion with your leg crossed.

3. Ready? Then, close your eyes.

4. Try to clear your mind. The idea here is trying to achieve a ‘no-mind’ state, meaning that you’re trying to get yourself unattached from your thinking mind. At first, this is not easy to accomplish but with some practice, you can. Try to rise above your mind and just watch over it. If noises in your mind get into your way, gently observe and silence it.

Remember that you’re NOT your mind. That’s why you need to rise above your mind and seize control, you’re the master of your mind. Only then you can silence the noises and achieve inner peace.

That’s it. That’s the most basic of meditation. Just practice to keep letting go any noise that may pop into your mind. The objective is to achieve and prolong the quiet state in your mind. The more frequent you give your mind some empty spaces, the more relaxed it will become.

Again, please remember that meditation needs practice. Don’t expect to do it perfectly as this will give you more stress instead. If you’re new to meditation, start with a shorter session (like 10 minutes) and work your way up to longer session. Just keep on practicing the steps outlined above to clear your mind.
