Passion Without Purpose Is Action Without Vision

Many individuals appear to be looking and I believe as well as trying to understand the answer to this question. What is passion? To be able to answer this question may help these individuals achieve ongoing success.

I know this to be true because of the article on my website What is Passion consistently receives more hits and reads during the last 2 years than any other page or article. However, what I have also come to learn is that many of these individuals could realize far more success from their passion is they had taken the time to understand, crystallize and clarify their purpose of life.

Since I have begun working with the most advanced systems, people, I have recognized that the majority, well over 80%, have not taken the time to define their own purpose in life. This lack of definition and therefore clarity reminds me of the Chinese proverb that states:

Vision without Action is a daydream; Action without Vision is a nightmare.

If you substitute the words Purpose for Vision and Passion for Action, this now reads as:

Purpose without Passion is a daydream; Passion without Purpose is a nightmare.

For me what this means is that when we do not know the purpose of life, the results from our actions or our passion are muddy, gray and create a life where we are working harder and not smarter. If we are trying to realize greater self improvement, being able to clearly and succinctly state our purpose is one self improvement technique that should be in everyone’s self improvement toolbox.

My coach, mentor and friend shared a personal story about one of his friends who had the opportunity to play golf as the 4th person in a threesome that had just started. Much to his surprise, one of those individuals in that threesome was Ralph Metcalfe. Over the course of the 18 holes, this golfer learned about purpose and passion first hand from Mr. Metcalfe as Mr. Metcalfe shared his story about coming in as first loser not once but twice in the Olympics.

The sharing continued and Mr. Metcalfe shared his purpose in life with this individual and how knowing his purpose kept him focused and able to overcome tremendous obstacles. Mr. Metcalfe’s personal story is a living testimony to the incredible value that purpose brings to each individual and the affect that purpose has on the goal to achieve ongoing success.

Much has been said and written about the Purpose Driven Life. This is a great book, but I have found two other books about purpose to be even more beneficial: The On Purpose Person and the On Purpose Business both my Kevin McCarthy.

If you are not where you want to be, then take the time first to crystallize your purpose in life and commit it to writing. Your purpose will evolve and grow as you evolve and grow. By taking action to execute this simple self improvement technique, you will have a much clearer path as you travel the road to success.
