Tips For Overcoming Procrastination

Procrastination can be a very serious problem and learning how to overcome it can improve your career as well as personal life. If you find yourself always in a habit of putting things or tasks off, then here are some tips for you to get rid of such habit.

Firstly, learn to take a RESPONSIBILITY. Here is an easy way to do this, always remember to replace the words “have to” with “want to”. So instead of saying “I have to do that”, say “I WANT to do that”. See how these words can shift the control to you? Understand that you have the choice to control what you want. By saying “want to” you are telling yourself to take a responsibility and do the thing that you want to do. On the other hands, the words “have to” sounds like you’re doing something not because of your choice and hence can just put it off and give excuses.

Secondly, BREAK DOWN TASK into several smaller tasks. If you want to do something and feel that the whole thing is a bit overwhelming, then try to break it down into smaller parts. You will procrastinate if you feel overwhelmed, this is a human nature. For example, if you find your house is in such a big mess and you want to clean it up but is overwhelmed by the chaos, then take out a pad and start taking a list of tasks that you can manage and start doing. For example, start by tidying up a table, picking up small stuffs and putting them back in their original place.

Throw PERFECTIONISM out of the window. Thinking to do something perfectly can result in putting task off indefinitely. You will always tend to avoid starting a task or project because you’re telling yourself that you still need more time so that you can do the project perfectly. Without any deadline or sense of urgency, perfectionism can cause you to procrastinate forever. Moreover, thinking to be a perfectionist can cause unnecessary stress and hence can also be used as an excuse to procrastinate and avoid starting the project all together.
