What Is Dharma?

The word Dharma comes from Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages in the world, which was originated in ancient India. It came from the root word “Dhr”, which means to uphold or support.

So Dharma is often defined as the proper conduct, duty or righteousness of human life. In another words, it means to act according to one’s duty. Each person, depending on his duty and situation at hand, will have a different Dharma. For example, a Dharma of a soldier during a war is to kill and be killed in the name of defending the nation he or she serves. A Dharma of a doctor is to save lives, even the lives of his or her enemies.

Our world will be in harmony with its natural law if every human beings understand and follow their Dharma. Whatever your job is, you will do well if you can properly identify and understand the Dharma for your job. For example, one the duties of a manager is to act as a job coach to establish an organizational culture within a workplace. The duty of a manufacturing engineer is to research, improve and create new products.

I am totally convinced that everyone can do a better job if they can properly identify and perform their Dharma accordingly.
